We pick a ‘We Are The Tastemakers’ Winner

Martin Miller’s Gin celebrated the start of London Cocktail Week this Monday with the London heat of their global mixology competition to win a trip to Iceland; We Are The Tastemakers.

Twelve carefully selected entries met at the London venue, Merchant House – a premium Gin and Rum house run by the London Bar Consultants. It was the perfect setting to showcase the talents of the chosen finalists to battle it out in three rounds to be the first of five selected winners from around the world to travel to Iceland with the brand.

The judges were Martin Miller’s Brand Manager, Liam Murphy; Ally Martin of Peg and Patriot; Nate Brown of London Bar Consultants; and Sasha Filimonov, Best Bars Executive.

The first round, in which they produced an original Martin Miller’s cocktail, saw an incredible array of creativity from the contestants; from branded bottles to homemade macaroons paired with cocktails and even Martin Miller’s Gin tattoos!

Round two saw the field narrowed to six contestants, who had to draw classic gin cocktails out of a hat, and then make with their own personal twist in just eight minutes.  The standard of the competitors’ creations from both rounds was so impressive that the judges were unable to pick two finalists as originally planned and modified the final round to accommodate the top three.

The final round saw freelance mixologist Celia Schoonraad, Dominic Whisson from the American Bar at the Savoy and Megs DeMeleunaere from The Pond Dalston presented with three mystery boxes containing a variety of unusual ingredients.  It was here that their skills were really put to the test as they worked under the pressure of time and the suspense of the audience to create a spontaneous serve.

The three contestants rose to the occasion and swiftly composed and named their final cocktails.  Dominic produced ‘First Bourne’ which comprised of Uzo juice, elderberry liquor, rose liquor, egg white, Ribena and Martin Miller’s Westbourne Strength gin.  He was followed by Celia, who created ‘I Pine for You’ made from half Martin Miller’s standard 40% and half Westbourne  strength over pine, Vermouth Cocchi, Byrhh Grand Quinquina, Benedictine, Angostura Bitters and Lemon Oil.  Finally Megs developed ‘Miller Thyme’ which contained lemon juice, sherry, damson jam, lemon thyme and Martin Miller’s Gin.

After much deliberation from the judges, Megs was crowned overall winner.
